Keeping an eye on your engine oil between oil changes is one of the simplest things you can do to protect your vehicle, and it takes only a few minutes. Many Columbia drivers have never learned how, but it is easy once you know the steps, and it can help you catch a problem before it becomes serious.

Start with the engine off and the vehicle parked on level ground. On most vehicles, it is best to check the oil when the engine is cool or has been off for several minutes so the oil has settled. Locate the dipstick, pull it out, and wipe it clean with a rag. Then reinsert it fully and pull it out again to read the level, which should fall between the two marks near the tip. While you are there, note the color and consistency; oil that is very low, extremely dark and gritty, or milky may signal a problem worth checking.

Some newer vehicles use an electronic oil monitor instead of a dipstick, in which case your dashboard provides the reading. Checking regularly helps you spot a leak or high oil consumption early, before low oil can damage your engine. If you find your oil is low, topping it off with the correct type is fine, but a vehicle that repeatedly runs low deserves a professional look.
